Has stem solitary, rugged and devoid of visible palm, the leaves are pinnate, blue-green in the presence of thorns at the base. The fruits are edible (dates).

Palm full sun, adapted to saline conditions and can tolerate frost.
Species very ornamental because of the beauty of their foliage, although it is not widely used in Brazil as an ornamental. In the semi-arid Northeast there are some plantings in the production of dates, which is indispensable to the presence of male and female plants.
